MIDTOWN

The Midtown project in Minneapolis was not only an opportunity to provide building and site signage, but allowed Signcrafters a chance to be part of neighborhood revitalization.   Originally a Sears retail store and catalog warehouse building built in 1928; it was closed in 1994 and lay vacant until 2005.  The surrounding community was in need of a change and the Midtown building was the center piece of this change effort.  Signcrafters was contracted to build the large 10′ rooftop letters as well as other site signage.  The rooftop sign would serve as a beacon to direct citizens to the newly developed retail and housing area.  This sign is constructed of aluminum channel letters with exposed LED lighting.  The use of LED lighting was a key component of the project because of its low energy usage and minimal maintenance.  Signcrafters produced several sample letters to determine which system would be the best for the project.  After diligently working with the building owners, architects and lighting designers, a final decision was made.  Before construction could begin the entire sign package needed to be approved by the city and National park Service.  After many submittals, revisions and meetings, approvals were finally granted.  Signcrafters needed to use the site tower crane to swing the letters in to place atop the 20 story building.  Once installed the sign could be seen from over 2 miles away, which allowed the public to easily find the development.  Signcrafters also manufactured and installed several smaller exterior building identification signs, directory monument signs and interior directories.  The entire project site was unified through a consistent, simple sign plan that enabled consumers to visit the site with ease and ensure the success of the newly revitalized area.
